Welcoming in the New Year

As we move all too quickly into the new year we thought we should share some of our New Year traditions. One of these is to farewell el Año Viego – the old year – usually done in the form of creating a figurine of some not-so-popular figure, such as a politician you may not like, filling it up with fireworks and then, on the stroke of midnight, relegating him (seems to invariably be a “him”) to history in a blaze of exploding fire.

Even more important is the baking of cakes and biscuits. At the house of Denis and Nellie Teruel, the big out-door oven is fired up and the baking commences – this alone is sufficient reason to visit these communities!
